Vintage (or embarrassingly retro) Tarantino. More fetishizing of his actors as opposed to empathy for his characters in this tedious pseudo-morality tale. The "gargantuanly entertaining" (Richard Corliss, Time Magazine) sequel is one extended macho-talk sequence after another, each eliciting bored though slightly variant groans. Its legacy may be that it solidified "Very 90s" as an (in)authentic genre. And just because "campy" is in quotes and therefore doubly self-aware doesn't mean it's serious, or fun. That the critics & geeks all loved it says something about the souls of geeks & critics. I tuned out by the end and entertained myself by imagining Warren Beatty (originally slated) in the David Carradine role. Oh yeah, vol. 1 sucked too.
